General Lauris Norstad (1907-1988) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up in Red Wing, Minnesota where he attended high school. After developing an interest in military service, Norstad secured an appointment to the United States Military Academy where he graduated in 1930 with a commission as a second lieutenant of cavalry. Henry Russell Spicer (b. Feb. 16, 1909, Colorado Springs, Colo.-d. Dec. 4, 1968) received his commission as 2nd lieutenant in 1935. He advanced through grades to major general in the U.S. Air Force in 1953. He was commander of the 17th Air Force, 1958 to 1962, then the 25th Air Division (SAGE) at McChord Air Force Base, Washington, from 1962 to 1964. He retired from Air Force service in 1964.
